A Guide to Tax and the NCT in Relation to Classic Cars |
|
NCT
There is an excellent guide to the NCT at the
Citizens Information website so there is not much point in repeating the
details here. All you really need to know is that if your car is over 30 years old,
or if it is a car-van that is taxed privately, or if it a camper van, then it is
exempt from the NCT test. Commerical vehicles that are taxed as such are required
to do a DOE test instead.
Motor Tax
Once again the
Citizens Information website gives a good guide to motor tax laws. The only
point of real interest to classic car buffs is that all vehicles over 30 years old
are subject to a reduced rate of €42 per annum. Also camper vans are subject to
a reduced rate of €78, so if you can prove your post 1977 VW Type 2 is a camper van in the eyes of
the taxman then you could save a lot of money - no point for your pre 1977 as it qualifies
for the €47 rate anyway!
